Thick Fungal Toenails

Presentation

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the toenails that often causes the nails to become thickened, brittle, and discolored with yellow-brown tones. Edges may erode, and the nails can become painful when walking, wearing shoes, or if they break off.

Sometimes, trauma or injury to the nail root can mimic the appearance of fungal infection, making a professional evaluation important. If untreated, the infection can also spread to the skin of the foot, leading to athlete’s foot (Tinea Pedis), which appears as dry, flaking, or irritated skin between the toes, on the soles, or across the foot.

Common Causes

• Weakened immune system

• Warm, moist environments – locker rooms, showers, gyms, and spas are common sources

• Direct contact with fungal spores through shoes, socks, or shared surfaces

Prevention Tips

• Always wear sandals or shower shoes in public locker rooms, showers, or pool areas

• Dry thoroughly between the toes after bathing or swimming

• Choose breathable footwear and socks to keep feet dry

Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored to the patient and severity of the infection:

• Topical antifungal creams, lacquers, or medicated solutions

• Oral antifungal medications for persistent infections

• Laser therapy in certain cases to target fungal growth

• Nail trimming and debridement – immediate in-home relief by reducing nail thickness, easing pain, and lowering the risk of complications. This is performed during service visits and is often covered by insurance.
