Warts and Other Skin Problems

Presentation

Warts, also known as verrucae, are growths that may look like thick callused skin but can be identified by tiny black dots—these are small blood vessels feeding the wart. They may appear as a single lesion or as a cluster (mosaic warts) and are often painful when squeezed side to side or when walking.

Common Causes

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) entering the skin through small cuts or openings. They spread easily in public places where people often walk barefoot, such as gyms, locker rooms, and swimming pool areas.

How to Prevent

• Always wear sandals or protective footwear in public showers, pools, and locker rooms.

• Keep your feet clean and dry to reduce the risk of infection.

Treatment

Warts can be stubborn and may require multiple treatments. Options include:

• Topical treatments such as medicated creams, freezing (cryotherapy), or acid applications.

• Surgical removal, performed under local anesthesia, for more persistent or painful warts. This procedure is quick (15–20 minutes) and can be done safely at home through our mobile podiatry service.
